MOST ICONIC BUILDING
IN THE AREA

Located at the city center island Oostenburg, The HUBB is the one of the most
iconic buildings in the area. The revitalization of the old INIT building is part of
the wider urban redevelopment of the island. Other iconic elements are the
Van-Gendthallen, the Werkspoorhal with its blue crane tres-tles and the quay
walls. But did you know that there are nice shops and good restaurants in the
neighborhood? What about a nice lunch at Rosa en Rita or a bite at restaurant
Roest. Take a stroll in the Czaar Peterstraat with nice shops and have your
guests sleep at the Inntel hotel Landmark, which is just around the corner.

Steam engines and steam locomotives
In the 19th century that baton was taken over by Werkspoor, which around 1850 was the largest machine factory in the Netherlands. Initially Werkspoor produced steam engines and steam locomotives. From the end of the 19th century, the focus shifted to railway equipment and marine diesel engines.

Industrial complex with raw character
It would take more than a century before the industrial dominance of northern Oostenburg was broken. The last production site in northern Oostenburg closed in 1995, leaving a vacant industrial complex with a ‘raw’ character. The Van Gendthallen were designated as a national monument in 1998, followed by the Werkspoorhal, which was declared a monument in 2016. At the same time, the newly constructed INIT building was take into use in 2003.
